To kick off 2018, I'm happy and excited to announce that I can show you a new demo video about my project, this time around in an actual VR environment. The developer of the Unreal Engine 4 software, Epic Games saw much potential in the virtual library and was kind enough to sponsore me with an Oculus Rift VR kit, including a Headset, Sensors, Touch controllers, and a Xbox controller. I'm very thankful for Epic Games and Oculus for the awesome gift; it is an immense help because now I'm able to improve every aspect of my project by trying it out and seeing how it works in "real life." And I'm thankful for Allegorithmic too, who provided me with Substance software for one year.

My work is coming along nicely, and I've learned quite a lot. By the looks of things, I'm proud to say that it will most likely be finished this summer. The conversion for the Virtual Reality environment is ready, so users can now interact with virtual objects, for example, tablelamps, balls, a mug, and, of course, books. I assume I'm over the hardest part of my project, so in the next semester, I'll spare time for perfecting the details of this virtual library, no matter how busy I am.

I'm planning to make the finished product available to everyone free of charge. For now, I'd like to invite you to take look at the new demo video presenting the virtual library in an actual VR environment, using a VR kit.

Recently, I've made a new and better demo video, which I would like to show to you. I think it's time for me to take a little break until I'm refreshed enough to continue working on my project.

First of all, here is the video, enjoy it:

Although the virtual environment needs some improvement, for example, around the textures and models, I assume this product is far better than the earlier one, especially because now I've managed to include a counter, stairs, a painting and fences. Moreover, I've learnt to make materials in Unreal Engine 4 in a very short time, so now you can see a green surface on top of the tables instead of the previous temporary golden material.

This is a list of what I would like to achieve in the near future:
- Include more objects and improve some of the existing ones
- Paint textures with the Substance software
- Fix the lighting and the reflections
- Create a night scene with stars, the Moon and switched on lamps
- Make statues (the hardest part of project, in my opinion)
- Create books

In addition, I hope I'll be able to buy an Oculus Rift VR kit, a new laptop, a photoscanner machine and some new software, as well. I assume the scanner machine would make my work easier because it would be essential to make realistic and complex statues for the ceremonial hall.

Nevertheless, the working prototype was finished earlier than I would have thought, so my estimation so far is that I will finish my project in 2017, if things are going well.

Footnote:
3D graphics and Virtual Reality are popular now and better and better technologies are developed around the world. Unreal Engine 4 is one of the best and most highly developed technologies. Even though it was originally created for video games, it is now suitable for education, architecture, medicine, the media, and so on. I hope that my spectacular project will help the ELTE University Library, as well as other libraries in the whole world to improve their perception along with that of computer graphics.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04095352960673553015noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2067937803889155693.post-51524582109265923072016-10-19T17:34:00.002+02:002016-11-05T14:27:49.428+01:00Virtual University Library Project - part 3

Recently, I have been working a lot on my project. My intention was to port the models to Unreal Engine 4 so the project could step into the next phase. Finally, I have finished working on the prototype. If I had VR glasses I would try them on to take a look around the library.

The virtual environment is very simple; it lacks a lot of objects, for example, fences, counter, stairs, paintings, frescos, texturing, and so on. I am going to build new elements step by step and replace the old things with new and better ones. I will use Substance Painter and Substance Designer, which are perfect software for creating realistic textures for video games.

Below, you can see the first test of my project; it didn't have any building elements, but the healthy, fresh and open air:

This is the second test with simple building elements:

This is the link of the video containing brief information about my project.

I think there are still a lot of tasks ahead of me, which will take a lot of time because I don't want to do a sloppy work. But Unreal Engine 4 is an amazing software; it makes the whole process a lot easier, and essentially, it makes my life better.
Excuse me for the belated post. I had to study a lot for my state exam, but now I can say that I successfully graduated. Moreover, I created a few smaller projects along the line, as well, to build my portfolio. Therefore, I didn't have too much time, but I worked on this project a bit each day, too. Now I am publishing its second part, which is something. Isn't it? In any case, you can see the first post about my project here:

I'm still in the modelling period, but I can show you which part of the library has already been created. One of the most difficult parts is the main column's head (sorry, I don't know the official name for it because I'm not an art historian) full of ornaments. You can compare it to the original one. I know it's not perfect but I'll adjust it as close to reality as possible. Most of the elements were made in Maya, but some of them were made in Zbrush. I made the textures in Zbrush, which was easy because they only contain two colors (white and yellow).

AI. Is this the best you can do?

Artificial intelligence is perhaps the most interesting and the most controversial topic. In my opinion, out of all the aforementioned technologies, this will be the one that is implemented the latest. As is the case with other elements of games, the obvious goal here is also to develop more life-like technologies where non-player characters react realistically. I'm almost a 100% sure that the technology used will have been heralded as the next milestone in humanity's evolution. Futurologists believe that 2050 will be the certain date when artificial intelligence with humanlike senses will appear; this will be supplemented by human emotions, as well, so the technology will not only be restricted to the area of thinking. Computers that are currently the strongest do not have enough power and capacity to model an entire human brain with all its functions, but this will probably have become a reality by this date. The entertainment industry will want to integrate this into the virtual world's living characters somehow. The big question is, will it be ethical to shoot a non-player character who can think properly and has senses? We could say that it – or he/she? – is just virtual and artificially manufactured, but the answer is not so simple.

MMORPG, as long as the eye can see

Let us finally mention the future of MMORPG, which I think will be quite amazing. I assume this genre won't bear its current name, and it will even be an exaggeration to say that it is a genre. Instead, we will talk about it as a special way of life. People will have fun in one or more virtual worlds , which are different from the real world, and if they overdo it, they will live in those worlds. Artificially generated worlds could serve as a kind of shelter for those who do not want to or find it very hard to live in the world as we know it today. This could provide an excellent opportunity for very frustrated, depressed or physically disabled people. In the future, everyone will be able to choose an avatar according to their preferences, with skills and qualities they desire. The world itself could either be fantasy or science fiction, whatever users want: we will be able to choose from just as wide a selection of genres, as is the case with various movie or game titles nowadays. We might confuse player characters with non-player characters due to advanced artificial intelligence techologies. All forms of human relationships and contacts could be transferred (yes, even that, too), since interaction, similarly to reality, will be complex, and reactions will be so life-like that we will forget that we are only dawdling in virtual worlds.

Of course, the implementation of the technology raises many questions, and it would take a long time to discuss its pros and cons. However, the game universe certainly will change a lot through the decades, so much so that we won't be able to recognize it.

This is the end of the series about the topic of video games, but it is a food for thought.

This is the sequel to my previous post about the future of video games, where I wrote about story-driven or interactive movie games that can overcome linear ones. You can read the first part here.

CryEngine? Come on!

The graphic engines of modern games are able to portrait artifically created worlds almost as if they were real. But can it go even further than that? Naturally. Just look at what happened to old black and white movies. Colorful pictures had a great influence on cinematography and television, and everyone thought that this was the peak of movies, that this could not be superseded. Then HD-quality movies appeared, also improving the factor of enjoyability a lot. Around the time of the technique's development, 3D movies appeared. As it is with films, video games' graphics will never achieve their maximum, no matter how detailed they are. However, with regard to the 3D technology, it can be expected that instead of the limited form of entertainment that the current flat panel displays provide, it shows real stereoscopic images, visible to the naked eye. Graphic engines and 3D graphics programs will be able to do more and more, their use will become more economical, and it will be easier for developers to create objects, places, characters, effects and all other elements that can only increase the realisticness. In the end, we will be able to see drifting powder, tiny insects and other things which appear or disappear in virtual rooms' constantly and dynamically changing light.

Beyond VR

But what's the situation with virtual reality? Video games have their own artificially constructed worlds with their own law of nature. Everything seems alive and moving, players can use prefabricated main characters, or characters of their own choice to establish a connection with this virtual world. This environment will also become more sophisticated, and developers will seek to engage players more. VR goggles, for example, were invented not to have fun in an inclosed area, but rather to make players feel as if they were surrounded by the game.

The next milestone in the development will be quite revolutionary. Players will be able fully give in – their souls, so to say – to the virtual universe, almost indulging themselves in it, but only as long as they want to, of course. To better illustrate this phenomenon, imagine what would happen if we could live in the worlds of Matrix or Avatar. We could just lie down somewhere, pick up a helmet, which then would contact our brain, we could close our eyes, and be already falling into the games' world, where we can control our avatars – that is ourselves, actually – only with the help of our brain. If we took action in the environment, for example, we touched something, we would receive some kind of a virtual impulse, provoking a reaction. If we were fully indulged in the simulated world, we could really be the protagonists of the story, and we could also do firsthand actions, without any intermediary wire control devices. At last, people's dreams about becoming superheroes and saving the world could come true.
Seeing the VR glasses-backed virtual world, the lifelike graphics and the ever-developing artificial intelligence, it would not be far-fetched to think that the future has arrived, and leisure time activities have changed. But we should not get ahead of ourselves. Let's take a look at how it goes, one by one.

First of all, let's examine the following games: The Walking Dead, Beyond: Two Souls, The Last of Us, Life is Strange. What do they have in common? The fact that all of them can be considered to be interactive movies. We see that there are more and more story-driven games that beat even movies' storylines. When I played with the main character of Life is Strange, I felt like I was reading a book, watching a movie and playing a game at the same time. In addition to the great story, the characters in the game are not paper mache figures – they have pretty strong personalities. For me, the first videogame offering such an experience was Fahrenheit (called Indigo Prophecy in the USA) from 2005, from which point on I have started to love this genre. Such products involve the opportunity to make several kinds of decisions, which always have their individual consequences; that is, we can count on at least two different endings, increasing the replay factor. But does this mean that the era of linear games is on the wane?

We are witnesses to the fact that the line between movies and videogames is starting to blur – these two different genres can be mentioned together, which means that the entertainment products of the future will change into hybrid mixtures. We will be able to watch a movie and have an impact on the story or we will be able to play our way through a game like a movie, whichever you like. It is possible that this will become one of the main trends.

Now, this is the end of this post. It'll be continued soon with the topics of realistic computer graphics and virtual reality.

The next milestone after cloud computing?

An interesting vision of a new type of data storage option came to my mind. I think this could be the next milestone after cloud services, extended beyond the clouds, to space.

This would be called space data storage or "space computing" after the cloud computing model. Its essence lies in the fact that a separate space data center or space data stations would actually circle in space, around Earth with skilled staff guarding and managing the data. This would mean a big difference compared to cloud-based services operating in server parks on Earth. The benefits of space computing would be enormous, because stored data would much less be exposed to the negative effects of Earth, for example, most of natural disasters, not to mention the deliberate destructions. Of course, this would not mean that information could only be stored in space: there would be copies stored in several places, in stations on Earth. I do not claim that this doesn't have any disadvantages; there is a high chance that such data would not be able to resist to the effects in space, such as solar flares, collision with other satellites or space debris, and software malfunctions or network connection problems could also happen due to human error. I assume this service would gradually become a reality in the near future, perhaps in the 2020's. First, the most important data for humanity would be transported into space, and later, as the speed of telecommunications data transmission fastens, the method would become more widespread. For me, it is evident that this development requires that our data be stored beyond the clouds.

The situation is that we don't have an excellent educational system in Hungary, and this is an understatement. But how did we get here? Honestly, I don't know, but we should look to the future. Some of the newest, modern professions aren't taught in schools and universities. Naturally, programming education exists in elementary and high schools, but it is not efficient enough for it to be able to catch up to the labour market. In spite of having a lot of good programmers and information scientists, there is a large shortage in Hungary's labour market. Most of the well-educated experts are leaving our country to get better-paid jobs.

Why are the newest professions important?

Because they help the underprivileged to break out of poverty. These people can get good jobs with high salaries in the industry of, for example, programming and 3D graphics arts. It's possible in Hungary, especially for programmers. They have a very good advantage which is the fact that they don't need a degree to find a good job. Their knowledge is the only thing that matters. And a great portfolio to show their future employers, too, of course.

Generally, this is not mentioned in Hungarian library education, and most of Hungary's librarians don't really realize that these professions (especially that of CGI) are very important. The computer system and equipments of libraries show their attitude; they haven't got any software for users to be able to practice on, for example. There are a lot of books about programming in their stock, but there is a great lack of CGI books: most of these aren't imported to Hungary, aren't translated for Hungarians, and are very expensive. However, the library and information science departments of universities outside the capital – those of Szeged and Debrecen, for instance – are aware of the importance of programming, so they teach its basics to students majoring in libarian sciences.

What should librarians do?

I'm not an educational expert, but I know some things. I think librarians should apply for fundings to be able to buy relevant coursebooks and to develop a modern computer infrastructure which contains software with educational licenses. A lot of people cannot afford buying new computers with expensive software, and this opportunity could be very helpful for them in their ambition to become programmers or CGI artists. It's one of the libraries' social obligations because they say they struggle against poverty to help the underprivileged acquire useful skills. These students could make their way out of indigence with the help of these well-paid professions. Lots of people would be willing to study autodidactically, and libraries should give them the opportunity to do so by providing them with up-to-date instruments and a place to practice.

Why is this important and lucrative? Because evolution requires it, we live in an information society, everybody wants to develop software and multimedia applications, and more and more new jobs come into existence that require special computing skills. Therefore, librarians have to keep an eye on international trends and adjust to them.

Excuse me for the deceiving title, I was just being sarcastic – well-developed libraries are only a dream. Don't get me wrong, I don't blame libraries but this cultural section is in a catastrophic condition because of our government. I think it should be changed significantly, what is more, urgently. I could list the causes why it is in a bad shape until tomorrow morning but these are the most important ones:

Libraries are very underpaid: their average take-home pay is $300 (€270) per month.

Their computing infrastructure is out-of-date. Most libraries have at least ten-year-old computers with Windows XP operating systems. I have never seen Apple computers in any of the Hungarian libraries.

Libraries have difficulties with the deficit: very often they cannot even buy new books, not to mention computers.

Source: http://kefoportal.kefo.hu/konyvtar-es-informacios-kozpont-3

However, not everything is so bad because besides the contras, there are some pros, as well:

Librarians make an effort to surmount the aforementioned difficulties.

Libraries can gain funding for new computers from applications.

A lot of librarians are very kind people who can help you find relevant documents or answer your questions.

Libraries are the pioneers in the digital culture of mediation. They have the ambition to develop and modernize themselves. They use social networking websites and web 2.0 based services to contact their users.

The atmosphere of libraries is friendly and homely.

More are more documents can be found in digitalized formats on the Internet, too.

Recently, I've and analyzed the answers given to a survey I conducted for my thesis about the condition of Hungarian libraries. The result about our national library, for example, is exasperating. The institution would like to buy new computers, but it has ten-year or older computers with Windows XP because the preserver doesn't give it more funding.

The big question is how can libraries become well-developed in Hungary? With money, money, and money. Other requirements are met, but it isn't enough. If preservers don't give more money, where can libraries get their financial aid from? The answer is donation, which is very short. The next question is how can libraries increase donation? With good marketing. Have libraries got a good marketing? If they don't, why not? What counts as good marketing, anyway? I think these questions are difficult to answer, and so are the ones that could come up, leading to other topics. But unfortunately, I have to close this post now, otherwise it would go on forever.

However, I believe that sooner or later libraries will reach their dreams.

See you later.

I've started this project around the beginning of March but the idea appeared in my head in the last year. I think it may be the biggest project of my life. My goal is to create a library's beautiful virtual ceremonial hall, and at the end, my work will be compatible with VR technologies. Before my project, I didn't have any idea how to combine the two different fields: library and 3D computer graphics. I don't remember where this idea came from but I think it was a coincidence. Nevertheless, I want to tell you how I will create a virtual library in several blogposts.

I think there isn't another similar project of a virtual library anywhere in the world. Or if one exists, it must be out-of-date and made with technologies older than ten years. If you know about any up-to-date ones, please write me a comment below or e-mail me!

What is it and how did I start?

My project is about the University Library of Eötvös Loránd University which is in the capital city of Hungary, Budapest. Its whole ceremonial hall will be digitalised, and could be viewed with video game technologies. Virtual reality glasses will enhance the feeling. Firts of all, I made a virtual framework of the ceremonial hall of the library according to the pictures which can be found on the Internet. Then I contacted the library's director general, and showed my plan with pictures to her that contained my works' early stage. She liked it and helped me out with the blueprints of the library's building. It's an entirelly non-profit project, and when it is finished I'm going to place my work at the library's disposal for free. I cannot estimate how much time is required but I think it'll take one or two years because I make it all alone and I accept just minimal help or support.

Why is it important?

I assume my product would be very useful for the University Library. It might improve the library's marketing, and hopefully it will get much more financial aid from foreigners, too because this way they could get to know the University Library with VR technologies. They might want to travel to the library to see it with their own eyes. Beside foreigners, disabled people could also enjoy the opportunities granted by the VR technology, and get to know the well-known library's hall at firsthand (almost).

On the other hand, the CGI profession could gain appreciation of a cultural sphere because the 3D computer garphics art is not only for the film and videogame industry, but also for medical, archeology, cultural and other sciences, too.

Which softwares do I use?

For modelling, I use the Autodesk Maya and/or Blender software, for texturing Awesomebump and some image editor programmes, for sculpting Pixologic Zbrush and/or Autodesk Mudbox. Finally, I'll integrate my finished models into a VR environment, for which the video game developer software, Unreal Engine 4 is suitable because this technology gives me the opportunity to make my dream come true. Most of the graphics programmes have free educational or trial licenses, which are benefitial for me and my project. Hard surface modelling is very easy for me, but I think texturing (placing images and colorized surfaces on objects) will be the hardest and longest part of my work; however, I can cope with it.

Now, I will show you some pictures of my framework of University Library's ceremonial hall. I must make it absolutely clear that these aren't final because I have an intention of modifying the model.
Hello, Everyone! Let me introduce myself.

My name is János Császár from Hungary. I work in the field of library and information science and I'm an enthusiast for 3D computer graphics arts, too. I graduated at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary. The reason that I created my blog is that I want to tell you about some of my works, and also my opinion on the newest technologies in the world, for example, on 3D computer graphics, video games, social media, Internet safety, sciences, education, modern libraries, and the connection between these. I wrote about most of these topics in my theses. For a simpler navigation, I've created some main categories to divide the aforementioned subjects, so if you want to read about CGI, for instance, you should look for the adequate topic on the right-hand side, or if you wish to find some articles in connection with libraries, you can find them on the same side in the appropriate category.

My blog posts won't be too long for an easy reading and to not waste your time. I promise.

I hope you'll consider my blog useful. And if you want to contact me, please write comments or e-mail me! Have a good reading!

Regards,
János Császár
